Powering the Future: Training Electricians for EV Charger Installations

ree

As electric vehicles continue to grow in popularity, communities across the Upper Peninsula are seeing a rising demand for safe, reliable EV charger installations. Behind every charging station at a home, workplace, or public location, there’s a trained electrician ensuring that the system is wired correctly, code-compliant, and ready to deliver dependable power. At IBEW 906 JATC, preparing the next generation of electricians for this rapidly expanding field is a top priority.

EV chargers may appear simple on the outside, but installing them requires technical knowledge. Electricians must understand load calculations, electrical panel capacity, grounding and bonding requirements, equipment specifications, and evolving state and national codes. As charging technology advances, from basic Level 2 chargers to high-speed DC fast chargers, the need for specialized, hands-on training continues to grow.

That’s where the JATC apprenticeship shines. Apprentices learn not only the fundamentals of electrical systems, but also the modern skills needed to support clean-energy infrastructure. They work with real equipment, gain experience reading technical documentation, and master the safety practices essential for high-capacity electrical installations. By the time they complete their training, they’re qualified to install, maintain, and troubleshoot EV charging systems of all kinds.

For the community, this expertise means greater access to convenient, reliable charging options. As more chargers are installed, the region becomes more connected and future-ready. EV owners gain confidence, local businesses benefit from increased traffic, and residents enjoy the advantages of a modern, sustainable transportation network.

IBEW 906 JATC is proud to train the electricians who are powering this transformation and helping the Upper Peninsula charge forward into a cleaner, smarter future.
